Where can I find maps of Boggs Mountain State Forest?

Maps of Boggs Mtn DSF are located in the kiosk in the parking lot on Forestry Road.  They were printed by the Friends of Boggs Mountain due to the State's budget restrictions.  You may get a PDF file with the BMDSF map from the CDF website.

Why doesn't Boggs allow ATVs?

Boggs is not a "Green Sticker" area.  All motor vehicles operated on the forest must be legally licensed and street legal for operation on the State Forest roads and roads that access the State Forest.

The laws regarding ATVs are confusing. ATVs are not to be ridden on public roads. According to California Vehicle Code (CVC)  §590 a “Street is a way or place of whatever nature, publicly maintained and open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel.  Street includes highway.” Since the roads on Boggs are publicly maintained and cross-country use is prohibited [Title 14 CCR §1431], ATVs are not allowed

Is firewood cutting allowed?

Firewood permits are available from the State Forest from April 1 to October 31.. Firewood collection permits can be purchased for personal and commercial purposes after payment of a fee. Currently the price for a permit is $20/3cords. Chainsaws must have a working spark arrestor and the operator is required to have a shovel or fire extinguisher within 25 feet of operation.  Commercial producers are responsible for payment of all applicable taxes. Firewood collection is permitted on the entire ownership and is subject to constraints such as dead and down material only, no off-road driving, and no gathering during inclement weather conditions (muddy roads contribute sediment to the streams).

Campers, picnickers and other recreational users may gather dead wood lying on the ground for use within the state forest.

What does a "demonstration state forest" demonstrate?

The demonstration state forest system of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) was established in the mid-1940's to furnish local needs of research, demonstration, and education related to forest management. Currently, the demonstration state forest (DSF) system encompasses over 71,000 acres of land in the form of eight state forests.  DSFs are healthy, living forests which demonstrate conservation and protection of wildlife, fisheries, vegetation, soil, and watershed resources as well as sustained-yield forest management activities.

Boggs Mountain and the other State Forests demonstrates the productive and economic possibilities of good forest practices toward maintaining forest land in a productive condition. The management objectives and plans developed for each State Forest are subject to periodic review and approval by the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Yes, but Camping in state forests is restricted to designated camping areas at Calso and Ridge campgrounds. Designated campsites have a fireplace and tables.  There is a 14 day stay limit. Boggs does not collect any fees for camping or other recreational uses.
